The Three of Swords is a heart pierced by three blades: raw emotional pain, heartbreak, loss, or betrayal. It's one of the starkest cards in the deck, yet its message also carries the certainty that pain, once you move through it, heals, and that you'll come out the other side to enjoy life again.

Upright

The Three of Swords portrays a moment of sheer pain: your life is flooded with the sorrow of heartbreak or a serious loss. There may be unexpected betrayals, sudden breakups, the weight of loneliness or rejection, and it's usually something you didn't see coming. Like any card, it invites you to look for the lesson within the darkness: pain is a great teacher that makes us stronger. In time you'll see things with a clarity you don't have today and leave the past behind. It's also a time of release: let the anger, the tears, and the sadness out, take all the time you need, and then begin to recover.

Love
This is where the card lands hardest: misunderstanding, deception, arguments, and at its darkest, breakups, divorce, or abandonment. If you're looking for love, it's a hard time; feel the pain so you can let it go.
Work
Your ego may take a hit from a betrayal, a canceled project, or someone else taking credit for your work; at worst, job loss. If you're job hunting, try something different.
Money
Disappointments. Don't take in the whole picture at once: solve it piece by piece, day by day. A poor time for investments and partnerships, given the risk of betrayal.
Health
A hard time tied to sadness, depression, or anxiety. Keep a positive attitude, which can work wonders alongside the right treatments.
Spirituality
Don't cling to what has already run its course. Release the pain and open your heart to new experiences; time is the best healer, and ask for help if you need it.
Reversed

Reversed, the card signals that things are starting to look up. You've been through a hard storm, maybe a major loss or a relationship that left you battered, but the clouds are beginning to let the sunlight through. You're still hurting inside and are in the middle of recovery, not fully past it all. You're beginning to understand and accept, and to see the lesson in what you lived through. Keep letting the pain out if you need to, because crying cleanses. The worst is over: you rise like the phoenix, more whole and stronger, holding fast to your own ability to survive.

Love
You're starting to move past a huge pain, understanding and accepting it. You're not ready for a new relationship yet, but you're on the right track; you're learning to choose better for yourself.
Work
The misunderstandings and confusion at work give way to a new order. You focus on your own work; if things had been shaky, they settle down. Opportunities start to appear.
Money
The worst is behind you: shortfalls, mistakes, and fraud are in the past. Still a little fragile, keep saving, but happy new opportunities may be close.
Health
You may not have all the information; listen to your doctors but also to your instinct. Watch out for emotional strain: depression, anxiety, insomnia. Ask for help.
Spirituality
You're recovering but still fragile, needing something to hold on to. Be wary of those who have all the answers; they can turn out to be a letdown.
