The Devil
Tarot meaning

The Devil

Arcana
Major
Number
15

The Devil doesn't stand for evil or demons, but for free will and the chains we bind ourselves with. It speaks of bondage, temptation, addiction, and attachment to the material: the things that hold us down, sometimes without our even seeing them. The good news is that the chains are loose, and we can free ourselves the moment we decide to.

Upright

The Devil shows a situation of bondage that you tend to blame on outside forces, looking for a scapegoat so you don't have to own your part. It represents the basest passions, the instincts, the fears, and the behaviors that harm you, that "inner devil" that holds only the power you hand it. It can point to real addictions, or to an addiction to people, situations, and possessions, putting HAVING above BEING. There is a way out, and it's within you: face your fears, take responsibility for your share, and look at yourself honestly and hard.

Love
Passion, sensuality, and physical desire dominate, but the romance runs thin and the emotions stay shallow. There may be domination, jealousy, instability, and constant fighting.
Work
Favorable, thanks to your intensity, commitment, and shrewdness in business; good opportunities may arise. Be careful about mixing work and love, and about partners with an unreliable, domineering streak.
Money
A positive card: a good time for investments, contracts, and deals. But that shrewdness can backfire badly if there's deception or a hidden agenda; it's wise to save and not let money become an obsession.
Health
Favorable: regeneration, recovery from illness, and smooth recoveries after surgery. Look after your reproductive health, avoid promiscuity, and keep an eye on stress and burnout at work.
Spirituality
Keep a positive mindset and take stock of who you surround yourself with. Steer clear of people who are overly critical or controlling: life is too short to live it on someone else's terms.
Reversed

The Devil reversed reads in two parts. On the personal and emotional level it's very positive: liberation, detachment, and breaking the mold. Everything that was suffocating you starts to turn around as you take the reins of your life and let go of what controlled you, whether a relationship, an environment, or a career. The heavy materialism transforms into a calm detachment where being wins out over having. The negative flip side is that you lose the shrewdness and sense of timing the upright card offered.

Love
Not so positive: passion fades, and there may be disappointments or a loneliness imposed by circumstance. On the good side, the hostilities cease and the interest grows deeper than the merely sensual.
Work
Its most negative side: this is no time to innovate or make career changes. Tensions may arise from poor communication and envy; don't sign contracts or form partnerships for now.
Money
It can signal scams or swindles: don't invest, don't lend, don't take out loans. Be cautious, even downright wary; the tight spot will pass, just don't make it worse.
Health
Possible relapses or disorders of a sensual nature. On the plus side, the sense of liberation greatly lowers your stress, and if you'd been in a slump, you'll improve.
Spirituality
Your positive attitude remains key, especially when it's hard to keep up. Remember that, appearances aside, you're not truly trapped: use the freedom you have.
