The Eight of Cups is the decision to walk away: leaving behind something that no longer satisfies in order to seek a deeper sense of meaning. It isn't running away, but the courage to admit that something has run its course and to set out on an uncertain path, even when taking the first step hurts.

The Eight of Cups asks you where you're going to find the fulfillment that material pleasures no longer give you. The figure leaves behind everything already won to begin a more spiritual journey, driven by a deep disappointment: something — love, work, wealth — has let you down, or you reached it only to find it isn't enough. This is the classic situation of letting go of what isn't working: a job, a relationship, a project. There's sadness in the choice, but you know it's for a greater good. If something isn't right, you'll be the one to make the move; trust your instinct.
- Love
- You may decide to end a relationship, however long it has lasted; afterward, give yourself time alone before starting another.
- Work
- It may not be the right fit: boredom, apathy, feeling undervalued. You can leave it or rethink it, but it won't sort itself out on its own.
- Money
- A card that nudges you to look for new sources of income on your own terms; you can take a chance if it enriches you beyond the material.
- Health
- Possible stress and exhaustion from weighty decisions; eat well and respect your sleep.
- Spirituality
- You need a stretch of solitude to find wisdom and answers; make peace with your inner voice and listen to it.
The Eight of Cups reversed shows confusion: you want a real change, but the fear of losing your comfort zone — good or merely tolerable — leaves you paralyzed. You know certain circumstances no longer work and that you've tried everything, yet you can't quite commit to the decision and keep wavering, one thing one day and the opposite the next. There may be a fear of intimacy and a tendency to flee your own troubles rather than face them, even though that's just kidding yourself.
- Love
- An urge to close things off, maybe at the worst possible moment; quiet your thoughts, the ending will come once your conviction has matured.
- Work
- A drive to drop everything at once; rein in the impulse and deal with the situation, because there may still be solutions.
- Money
- Don't act rashly with your money or your projects; calm down, weigh your moves, and hear out other people's advice.
- Health
- Stress is overwhelming you, but running from it doesn't help; remember you're in charge of your thoughts, and thinking well helps you feel well.
- Spirituality
- You need to engage more with the outside world; don't isolate yourself, get out and talk to people, that's the start of a solution.
